Diabetes Alert Day

March 27th is the American Diabetes Association Alert Day. This is the day to alert the American public about the seriousness of diabetes, particularly when diabetes is left undiagnosed or untreated and to sound the alarm about the prevalence of type 2 diabetes by asking everyone to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test.

What do I have to do?

1. Take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test (Only 60 Seconds!)

9 out of 10 Americans most at risk for type 2 diabetes don’t know it. Take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test to find out if you’re one of them. Knowing your risk is the first step toward a healthier life.

2. Learn How to Lower Your Risk

First, know your family health history, as having a family history of diabetes, you have a greater chance of developing type 2 diabetes. You are also more likely to develop type 2 diabetes if you are over age 45, are overweight and/or are not physically active.
Take the steps to delay or prevent type 2 diabetes by:

  • Losing weight and keeping it off. Prevent or delay diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of your starting weight. For example, if you weigh 200 pounds, your goal would be to lose about 10 to 14 pounds.

  • Exercising. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. If you have not been active, talk with your healthcare professional about which activities are best for you. It is always best to start slowly and gradually build up to your goal.

  • Eating healthy foods most of the time. Eat smaller portions to reduce the amounts of calories you eat each day, which will help you lose weight. Choosing foods with less fat and drink water instead of sweetened beverages is another way to reduce calories.

3. Share it

Create awareness by sharing what you’ve learned and ask friends and families to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test.
